I wanted to brush-up on my concept modeling skills which is one of the most common workflows utilized at studios for initial design reviews. To challenge myself even further I gave myself a limit of 2 hours to create a model that would be acceptable for initial design reviews and further development work.
I started with a couple of sketches from my friend and talented designer Michael Mills. You can find more of his work on his Instagram @automotivedesign (lucky guy got the coveted Instagram handle). 3 main views that really help in understand the design area the 2 quarter views, front and back, and the all-important side view that really helps with putting down the proportions of the vehicle.
Bringing in the side view sketch helps me quickly add in the wheels with the correct wheelbase, the centerline curves, and the overall stance.
The design called for some large simple surfaces so I put them in and blended them together with fillets giving the model the overall feeling as required by the sketches. The design's prominent features were the details of the headlights and taillights so it was important to make sure that those elements played nice with the volume of the body itself.
